The Nelson Mandela Institution (NMI) is a nonstock, non-profit corporation established in June 2005 under the State of Delaware General Corporation Law. NMI is a 501(c) non-governmental organization under the Internal Revenue Service code.  As such, donations to it are tax deductible.

NMI is engaged in the development and promotion of education in science, technology and related fields in Sub Sahara Africa through the establishment of African Institutes of Science and Technology.

NMI’S main governing body is the Board of Directors which meets at least bi-annually. The members of the Board of Directors have such powers, duties and responsibilities as set forth in the bylaws of the corporation. The Board is responsible for setting the overall direction of NMI.

The Board is made up of members appointed for their experience and expertise. Senior officers of the corporation are appointed with the approval of the Board of Directors.
